Bio: Schalk Claasen was born in Frankfort in the then Orange Free State where he also matriculated. He obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Engineering, Master’s degree in Business Administration as well as a PhD from the University of Pretoria in South Africa. He also received a Master’s degree in Quality and Reliability from the University of Arizona in the USA.

Professor Claasen was affiliated with the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering at the University of Pretoria for more than 30 years, 12 of which as Head of Department. He was seconded to manage the Centenary Celebrations of the University of Pretoria in 2008 and has since joined the Unit for Institutional Planning at the University of Pretoria.

Professor Claasen is a Professional Engineer, Honorary Fellow of the South African Institute for Industrial Engineering and a former Editor of the South African Journal of Industrial Engineering. He serves as Chairperson of the Professional Advisory Committee for Industrial Engineering at the Engineering Council of South Africa.

Bio: Brian Munsamy was born in Durban, KwaZulu Natal (KZN) in 1962. He completed his Secondary Education at the Glenover High School in Chatsworth, Durban, KZN. Brian certified in Computer Programming and obtained Certification in Electronics, prior to pursuing his studies in Management. He graduated with a Masters Degree in Business Administration (MBA) from the Business School Netherlands in 2005.

Bio: Born in Pretoria.

Lived in Thabazimbi, Sishen, Boshof (where I matriculated), Pretoria (where I studied to become an Industrial Engineer), Vanderbijlpark, Bothaville, Brits and eventually back in Pretoria for the past 34 years.

I am an honorary member of SAIIE of which I have been the Honorary Treasurer for several years.

I retired from Necsa (South African Nuclear Energy Corporation) in 2004, but since 2007 joined them again in a contractual arrangement to facilitate the establishment of the Pebble Bed Modular Reactor’s fuel plant at Pelindaba.

I am married to Barbara for 43 years and have three children and four grandchildren:
- Dirk my son an Engineer in Pretoria.
- Trienet, my daughter director external relations of the engineering department of the University of Virginia, living in New York.
- Maretha, my daughter an Afrikaans teacher living in Grahamstown.

I am a Christian, radio amateur, amateur astronomist, love trees, birds, mathematics, biology and outdoor life and supports the Blue Bulls rugby team.

Bio: After two years as a graduate apprentice in the UK, and four years as design engineer in the (then) Dept. of Posts and Telecommunications in Pretoria, he was appointed a Senior Lecturer in electronics engineering at Stellenbosch University in 1966. He was promoted to professor (1970), dean of the Faculty of Engineering (1979 – 1993) and Vice-rector (Operations) (1993-1998). After retiring he was appointed on contract to establish the Office for Intellectual Property at Stellenbosch University (1998 – 2002). He is the managing director of Unistel Group Holdings (Pty) Ltd (2001 - 1008).
Prof Viljoen was elected Engineer of the Year (1992) by the SA Association for Professional Engineers, and received the Order for Meritorius Service (1993). He was awarded the Medal for Science & Technology of the SA Academcy for Arts and Science (2000). He served on the Electricity Control Board, the Electricity Council (Eskom), the Council of the SABS, he Council of the SABC (Chairman 1989-1993), the Independent Broadcasting Authority, and SACPE. He is an honorary fellow of the SA Institute for Industrial Engineers. Was the driving force behing the establishment of Technopark, the science park in Stellenbosch, and serves on the judging panel of the Design Institute Design Awards since 1982 (chairman 1985 - 2006). He was chairman of the Task Group on Broadcasting in SA (1990-1991). His hobbies include scuba diving, genealogy (serving as a Board member of the Genealogical Institute of SA), and philately. He also serves on the Council of the Huguenot Society of SA.
